Archaeological Awareness and Historic Preservation Month May 2010 Schedule of Events This year’s theme is "Volunteers - Giving Time to the Past", honoring the volunteers who work to preserve Nevada’s heritage through monitoring archaeological sites, rehabilitating historic structures, educating school children. This year’s activities include lectures, rides and tours celebrating Nevada. Events are free unless otherwise noted. Carson City May 9: Preserve Nevada, the State’s non-profit preservation organization, will announce its 2010-2011 "11 Most Endangered Historic Places in Nevada" between noon and 1:30 p.m., at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Department of Cultural Affairs, 2180 S. Carson Street, Carson City. May 9: Take a ride into the past at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Department of Cultural Affairs, located at 2180 S. Carson St., Carson City, as it celebrates the 100th birthday of the McKeen Motor Car, No. 22 which the Museum has restored and made operational. Rides begin after 12:00 p.m. and will continue until 1:30 p.m. The short program and commissioning of the restored car will be followed by public rides on the car. Churchill May 8 and 22: Susan McCabe of the Carson City Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management will lead tours of Hidden Cave. Meet at the Churchill County Museum, 1050 Maine Street, Fallon at 9 a.m. to view a video and caravan to Hidden Cave 12 miles east of Fallon. The guided walking tour will include views of Picnic Cave and petroglyph panels before entering Hidden Cave. The ½ mile trek is up an incline so wear sturdy shoes, carry water and dress appropriately for the weather. Call the Churchill County Museum 775-423-3677 for details. May 22: The Nevada Rock Art Foundation will lead a tour of the Grimes Point Petroglyphs, 8 miles east of Fallon, one of the oldest and most interesting rock art sites in Nevada from 10 a.m. to noon. May 1: Bring your unserviceable American Flag to a flag retirement ceremony sponsored by the Silver State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at 10 a.m. at the Southern Nevada Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Adams Blvd, Boulder City. May 8: Noted rock art researcher David Lee will hold a photography workshop at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, Dept. of Cultural Affairs, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Las Vegas from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Mr. Lee will provide instruction on the art of archaeological field photography. Forest Service, the Great Basin College, the Elko County Chapter of the Nevada Archaeological Association and the Nevada Archaeological Site Stewardship Program are sponsoring the event. May 14 and 21 from 5 to 7 p.m., May 15 and 22nd 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Now is your opportunity to participate in a real hands-on archaeological excavation! No experience required! Join BLM archaeologists and others to conduct a test excavation of an archaeological site along Bullion Road near Elko. May 14: Squeek LaVake directs the 17th annual Comstock Children’s Chorus in a medley of songs from 1:30 to 2 p.m. May 14: See "The Many Faces of the Comstock" through boom and bust, TV Bonanza infusion and modern commercialism of Comstock architecture. Washoe The Historic Reno Preservation Society (HRPS) celebrates the month with 9 walking tours of historic Reno. Members of HRPS participate for free; non members pay $10 per person. May 8: Visit the campus of the historic Nevada State Hospital on Galetti Way in Sparks at 10 a.m. Rosie Cevasco and Kim Henrick will lead a tour of the remaining DeLongchamps buildings and the historic hospital cemeteries. May 11: Go behind the scenes as Sharon Honig-Bear and Anne Simone lead a tour of "Inside DeLongchamps Downtown," some of the most notable buildings in downtown Reno. View the interiors of the downtown post office, the historic courthouse, the Vachina apartments and the Riverside lofts. Tour starts at 4 p.m. May 15: Take a guided walking tour "Beyond the Reno Arches." Sharon Honig-Bear leads the tour that links the two Reno Arches and describes the history and forces that shaped the town: railroad, mining, immigrants, divorce and gambling. Tour begins at 10 a.m. May 18: Take a stroll through the working class "Wells Avenue Neighborhood" beginning at 6 p.m. Mark Taxer will lead the tour along the path of the Wells Avenue streetcar. May 22: Take a walk through the lovely residential area south of the Newlands Neighborhood on the "Monroe Street Tour". Elsie Newman and Anne Simone lead the tour beginning at 10 a.m. May 25: Take the "Historic Truckee River Walk" at 6 p.m. and learn about the rich history of the area through colorful anecdotes of earlier local residents.
